Well, this is interesting. Katy Perry set tongues wagging when a billboard went up in Times Square emblazoned with the date May 15. Fans guessed that she was going to announce the title of her new album, but it looks like the pop star is releasing a (not so) new single called “Witness.” The 32-year-old just posted a snippet of the track, which leaked over a year ago, on social media. “Can I get a witness (witness)? Will you be my witness (witness)?” she sings over ’90s-influenced dance beats. “I’m just looking for a witness in all of this, looking for a witness to get me through this.”
“Witness” has something of a history at this point. Not only has it leaked in various forms (at one point it had a Chance The Rapper feature), it’s also rumored to be the title of Katy’s fourth LP. After all, her Maison Margiela ensemble at the Met Gala had the word embroidered on the veil. What does this mean for “Bon Appetit”? Well, I guess it will be dismissed as a buzz track. Which is a shame because it’s a certified bop and the video is incredible. Hopefully, “Witness” will connect better with radio programmers and casual pop fans.
