The star is responding to cultural appropriation accusations from her newest music video, “No Promises,” in which she stars alongside the deejay trio Cheat Codes.
Throughout most of the 3.5 minute music video, Lovato stands in an empty warehouse, dancing by herself and whipping her hair back and forth. But the Twitterverse quickly pointed out that it appeared the musician wore her hair in dreadlocks, causing a storm of cultural appropriation accusations against the star on social media.
“Why does Demi have dreads,” one fan tweeted. “Ok but real talk did I see pics of Demi Lovato with dreadlocks earlier or was her hair just so messy it looked that way,” another fan said on Twitter.
Not one to hold back her feelings, Lovato confronted the controversy directly. On Monday, the singer addressed the issue via Twitter, confirming that she was wearing twists in her hair, not dreadlocks.
