He staged a takeover of Spotify, now Drake is taking control of the U.K. charts.
The Canadian rapper’s fifth set Scorpion (Cash Money/Republic Records) leads the way on the Official Charts Update and three tracks from it are on target to bow inside the Top 5 on the singles survey.
According to the Official Charts Company, Scorpion is edging out Florence + The Machine’s new album High As Hope (EMI) at the midweek stage. All three of the British artist’s three albums have hit the summit of the Official U.K. Albums Chart, while Drake has managed it just once (Views from 2016).
Scorpion struck fast and hard, smashing one-day streaming records on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music and setting the new one-week high mark for an album in the United States – in just three days. In a first-of-its-kind promotion, Drizzy swamped Spotify’s playlists last weekend, leaving some subscribers less than impressed.
Also getting away to a good start in the U.K. is virtual band Gorillaz’ new set The Now Now (Parlophone), new at No. 4, while Guns N’ Roses’ classic 1987 album Appetite For Destruction (Polydor/UMC) reenters at No. 6 following a special boxset release, and new albums by Bullet For My Valentine (Gravity at No. 7 via Search And Destroy/Spinefarm) and John Coltrane (Both Directions at Once – The Lost Album at No. 8 via Impulse) are tracking for Top 10 debuts.
On the midweek singles tally, George Ezra’s current leader “Shotgun” (Columbia) stays on top while Drake bags No. 2 (“Nonstop”), No. 3 (Don’t Matter To Me featuring Michael Jackson) and No. 5 (“Emotionless”).
The Official U.K. Singles and Albums Charts are published late Friday.
