Ellie Goulding has had an unusually quiet 2017. She lent her voice to Kygo’s “First Time,” but that’s it. Until now. The Brit comes out of hibernation to drop a surprise Christmas single. The hitmaker tackles “O Holy Night,” delivering a stripped-back, faithful interpretation of the yuletide classic. While it’s not the electro-pop banger fans have been waiting for, new music can’t be too far away given the amount of time she has spent in the studio this year.
The 30-year-old’s third LP, Delirium, dropped in 2015 and delivered the hit “On My Mind.” Subsequent singles underperformed, but she returned to the charts in 2016 with “Still Falling For You,” a ballad from the Bridget Jones’s Baby soundtrack. She has been chipping away at album four ever since, but might forgo a traditional release. “The old process of doing a single, then promo, then album doesn’t work anymore,” Ellie said in an interview. “Nowadays you can put out a single if you want to without a whole album to follow. So I might do that.”
