Imagine Dragons are officially the kings of the pump-up anthem. The group released a ferocious new single, «Natural,» on Tuesday (July 17) and it’s no surprise that the smash-mouth track will be the anthem of this year’s ESPN college football season.
The track features the band’s patented mix of explosive drums and inspiring lyrics, with singer Dan Reynolds leaning into the inspiring chorus, «‘Cause you’re a natural/ A beating heart of stone/ You gotta be so cold/ To make it in this world/ Yeah, you’re a natural/ Living your life cutthroat/ You gotta be so cold» over stadium-rocking instrumentation.
“Living in a dog-eat-dog world can bring out the worst in you, and sometimes, the best,” Reynolds said in a press release announcing the song. “It would be a lie to tell you I haven’t become somewhat skeptical about some things in the last decade of my life. However, I believe that when you truly learn to love yourself, the judging eyes and hateful words become meaningless. ‘Natural’ is about finding yourself and being willing and able to stand up to whatever adversity comes your way.”
«Natural,» follows Reynolds’ recent project, Believer, an HBO documentary that examined the relationship between the LGBTQ+ community and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
