Jennifer Hudson makes a glorious return to music with the release of her new single, “Burden Down.” Earlier this year she provided a first taste of what is to come with the release of a buzz track titled “Remember Me,” and it seems like the hitmaker is upping the stakes this time around. It has been three years since the 36-year-old released her last studio album, JHUD, but she makes up for lost time with a soaring ballad. Released today (December 12), the single is one of her most honest and striking to date.
“I’m a river. I keep running on. I’m a pillar you got used to leaning on. Underneath there’s a person. I’m a woman, and I’m hurting. Plus I feel like I’m holding up the world,” she admits over simple keys on the opening line. After being strong for so long her voice resonates with pain as she admits that she needs someone to intercede and provide sweet relief.
Defined by a simple production, the track builds to a crescendo and ends with an a cappella performance that is truly jaw-dropping. “Can I lay this burden down? Can you take it up for me. When you run me in the ground that’s the day you will see. For all I’ve done all alone, just for a moment please could I not be strong? Wish I knew how, how to lay this burden down.”
The accompanying music video is a simple but stunning affair. Directed by Sam Lecca, it features stunning lighting and breathtaking cinematography while highlighting the track’s stark beauty. Resplendent in a white gown and fur stole, J Hud performs in front of a piano in an abandoned warehouse. The camera captures the raw emotion on the siren’s face, but its most evocative moments come as she abandons the piano for the final a cappella run.
“Burden Down” promises big things for the diva’s fourth LP next year. The album has been billed as her most personal to date. Based on its lead single, it seems like Jennifer will be following through on her promise. Before it drops though she will need to finish up her tenure as a judge on the current season of NBC’s The Voice. Watch the music video and get a taste of J Hud’s fantastic return up top!
