Like most people that were unable to attend Camp Flog Gnaw, Lorde was watching the music festival through YouTube’s livestream this weekend. However, the New Zealand pop star noticed something during the Kids See Ghosts performance that most spectators probably overlooked—the concept of the box stage.
This afternoon, the singer-songwriter took to Instagram to point out the striking similarity of the stage design from her 2017 Coachella performance and Melodramaworld tour by uploading a series of images to her Stories as evidence. In the last post, Lorde writes “I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists are inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on for themselves. But don’t steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever.”
On Reddit, a user mentioned that both artists share the same stage designer, Devlin. The designer for the Kids See Ghost set has not been confirmed at this time. In the past, Lorde and Kanye West have remixed and covered each other’s songs. This is not the first time that an artist has accused West of plagiarism—the album artwork for YANDHI even comes from a timeline of copyright issues.
