Pink launches her 7th album today (August 10) with a soaring protest song called “What About Us.” Co-written with Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol and Steve Mac(he also produced it), the pop/rocker’s latest is the most 2017 song imaginable. From the chorus, which poses a series of questions no one can answer, to the very on-trend acoustic/electronic hybrid production, this is basically a snapshot of the here and now. It’s political without being obnoxious, pissed off and ultimately, a call to action.
“What about us? What about all the times you said you had the answers?” Pink asks on the chorus. “What about us? What about all the broken happy ever afters?” There’s a whiff of desperation about the verses (“we are problems that want to be solved, we are children that need to be loved”), but things change at the bridge. “Sticks and stones they may break these bones, but then I’ll be ready, are you ready? It’s the start of us waking up.” The 37-year-old is destined to add to her impressive tally of hits with this rousing, radio-ready anthem.
