Mom Knows Best
During the interview for her May Billboard cover story, Miley Cyrus revealed that mom Tish provided the inspiration for the title of Younger Now (coming September 29). “She was like, ‘When you were a little girl, all you wanted to do was wear high heels and tights.’ I wanted to be so mature. And she said, ‘I swear to God, you are younger now than you were years ago,’” Cyrus recalled. “And it just hit me: I am fucking younger now, and I am proud of that.”
DIY Miley
Cyrus wrote and produced all of Younger Now, working only with writer-producer Oren Yoel who co-wrote atmospheric Bangerz ballad “Adore You” and has worked with artists ranging from Asher Roth and Kanye West to Tori Kelly and Macy Gray. We’ve now heard three tastes of Cyrus’s upcoming sixth album — the sunny “Malibu,” wistful “Inspired” (which Cyrus performed at the One Love Manchester concert), and, most recently, title track “Younger Now” — all far from the hip-hop-leaning sound of 2013’s Grammy-nominated Bangerz.
A Voice Reveal?
Her 2016 tenure on The Voice, first as a mentor and then as a coach, had an undeniable impact on Cyrus’ decision to pivot toward a more classic pop-rock sound with Younger Now. “Sometimes I recorded in my trailer,” Cyrus says. “I recorded the ‘Malibu’ vocal there.” This fall, she’ll be back in her coach’s chair when Season 13 premieres Sept. 25 — four days before her album drops. What better stage to unveil another new single?
