Ariana Grande blessed fans with her new single, stylized «God is a woman,» early this morning (July 13). A mere few hours later, she has released the official music visual.
The video release came as a surprise to fans, as Grande posted on her Instagram page saying «video at noon» before posting several stills of the video with a countdown until 12:00 p.m. EST.
The aesthetically pleasing video directed by Dave Meyers, similar to the song, captures the intertwining of sexuality and spirituality. Grande is seen balancing on a wire, later seductively laying in a mural-like pool filled with paint. The video also features Grande standing in the center of a choir-esque group, which Grande described on Instagram as her «goddesses,» chanting «God is a woman» in uniquely cut white dresses. The video culminates with Grande wearing a crown posing in Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.
Fans were very quick to notice that the song stops briefly for a women-inspired speech during the latter part of the video. The speech, a cut given by Samuel L. Jackson in the 1994 film «Pulp Fiction», is recited by Madonna saying, «I will strike down upon thee, with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my sisters, and you will know my name is the lord, when I lay my vengeance upon you.» This settles speculation that Madonna had been working with Grande recently, after Grande posted a cryptic post thanking Madonna.
«God is a woman» serves as the second official single for Grande’s fourth studio album Sweetener, arriving on Aug. 17.
