Billie Eilish unveiled the stark visual for her latest single «Xanny» on Thursday (Dec. 5), making her directorial debut in the process.
The clip starts out normal enough, with the 17-year-old superstar delivering the first verse of the song while wearing a decidedly demure cream-colored turtleneck and and pants, her signature green roots traded out for plain brown locks.
However, the calming aesthetic of the video takes a startling turn once the track’s wobbling, off-kilter chorus kicks in. «I’m in their secondhand smoke/ Still just drinking canned Coke/ I don’t need a xanny to feel better,» Eilish croons as a hand creeps on screen to burn her face with a lit cigarette.
By video’s end, the teen wunderkind’s face is covered in tiny, dark burns delivered by multiple hands and as the lyrics’ proverbial secondhand smoke fills the room, Eilish rises from her padded bench, dusting herself off and wandering out of the frame after forlornly muttering the song’s closing lines.
