2018 is off to a great start (at least, musically). Artists like Troye Sivan and Hayley Kiyoko are pushing the LGBT pop agenda forward, Kylie Minogue is dropping a new single on Friday and Madonna has just started working on her 14th album. The Queen of pop broke the news via Instagram, posting a throwback pic in her story with heartwarming caption: “Feels so good to be working on new music again.” The 59-year-old has previously hinted that she might swap club beats for a more stripped-back sound on this outing.
“I’m traveling the world right now and listening to lots of different music,” Madonna told Entertainment Weekly in 2017. “I’m getting inspired by people and I’m just soaking things up right now. I feel like I’ve pushed the whole big-production arena tour to the max and done it the best that I could for such a long time.” Here’s where it gets really interesting. “It’s time for me to take a different approach and really get back down to the beauty and simplicity of music and lyrics and intimacy.”
The pop icon might even incorporate some world music sounds. “I moved to Lisbon, and I’ve been listening to a lot of music here, like fado, which is the music of Portugal,” Madonna revealed. “There’s such a cultural mix of people and music here. You could go out every night and hear different kinds of music. There’s a great jazz scene here. So right now I’m listening to a lot of local artists I’ve never heard of before, and that’s been really inspiring.” It’s time for a change of pace, but something tells me she won’t abandon the dance floor entirely.
