Matt Terry was crowned the winner of The X Factor 2016 last night, beating Saara Aalto.
Going into yesterday’s show, Matt and Saara were the only two acts that remain in the running.
The pair were top of the vote at last night’s freeze where 5 After Midnight went home, finishing in third place.
On Sunday, they performed to be crowned winner of The X Factor 2016.
The winner of The X Factor 2016 final was announced in the live show as Matt, beating Saara in the final vote result.
Over 6 million votes were cast over the weekend to decide the winner, according to host Dermot O’Leary.
Throughout the show, bookies couldn’t split the pair and both Saara and Matt were the favourites at various points in the live show.
At the start of the live final there was a special performance as Kylie Minogue teamed up with Matt terry and Saara Aalto on a cover of Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good).
The pair then reprised their favourite songs of the series: Saara selected Oh So Quiet by Bjork while Matt performed Writing’s On The Wall by Sam Smith.
Madness then took to the stage for the second guest appearance of the night and we also had some of the more ‘wacky’ auditionees return for a group performance of Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.
It was then finally back to Matt and Saara as they returned with their ‘songs to win’: Matt was first up with One Day I’ll Fly Away by Randy Crawford while Saara performed I Didn’t Know My Own Strength by Whitney Houston.
Unusually, neither performed this year’s winner’s song which has been revealed to be an original track written by Ed Sheeran and Welsh songwriter Amy Wadge who previously penned Thinking Out Loud.
After Saara and Matt’s performances, Little Mix took to the stage with a mega performance featuring their songs Oops and Touch, featuring Charlie Puth, as votes were verified.
It was then over to Dermot who revealed the final result with one of his trademark tense waits, as Matt was announced the champion.
Following his victory, Matt gave the debut performance of this year’s winner’s single, Christmas Comes Around.
